look ma no freewheel..........
for the past year i have been comtemplating on building a fixed cog ss, no freewheel, parang track bike, you can pedal backwards. . . rekta as others would call it and finally i was able to finish my build 2 weeks ago. i tested it on the road for 2 weeks and there was no mechanical problem. riding it was really hard, specially when going down steep hills, continous pedaling! so i decided to try it sa trails yesterday, went to bilibid and it was all good until my gear started to slip, i thought it was just the chain until i realized it was the cog that was slipping, stripped the thread on the hub where the cog was attached.(i used a threaded type hub and a track cog) good thing i was able to pedal up to grandtrail in westgate, by then the cog was all freewheel either way you pedal.
any pointers, suggestion on riding a fixed cog? tips? equipment? violent reactions reactions if any? hehehe

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
Maybe you really need a lockring. Sa pag pull (to slow down) and pag push (go forward) mo sa pedal eh naglu-loosen at nagta-tighten yung cog. The lock ring might prevent this.
I've also contemplated on going fixed. Didn't have the drive to really do it though
Best way for me to go fixed is thru a tomicog: http://tomicog.blogspot.com/
- here you could use a 135mm disc hub. One side is freewheel, the other is fixed thru a cog with holes for mounting on the disc side. $35.
Pwede magpa-bili? hehehe!

@sup: dba cbi ko syo magbuo ako ng fixed cog... pag nsa marcelo ka will show you the hub na nasira. may lock ring ako nilagay ...... maybe the hub is really old, 1987 pa eh.... but that tomicog gave me an idea!!!! will just reverse a screw type disc hub and have a cog drilled to fit the rotor mounts...but you cant use discs on it....?. another project to do this week. mwahahaha

If you will have it machined, make sure sentro yung cog sa disk mounts! Pero alam mo na yun. No more rear disc brake, pero that's the point of fixed gear - no brakes! ..well, at least the rear brake. Drift away Arnie!

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
haragan, na-try mo na ba mag fixed gear?
kung oo, trail o road? ano feedback mo?
addendum: I don't want to sound like I'm taunting. I don't really do steep climbs/descents so naisip ko pwede siguro sa trails that I frequent.

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
sup, na try ko na po mag fixed gear. kaso sa sidecar he he. for me kasi ang fixie nd pang trail yun pang on road lang po. lalo na kung ung cog mo ay fabricated, bubuhatin ka ng pedal mo pag pepreno ka di ba nakaka pagod yun, kasi kokontrahin mo naman ng diin para ka mag stop. basta i go trailing on my ss lang po.

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
Same here; never tried it but I read about it somewhere and the guy even races his fixed mtb. The guys name is Richard (forgot surname) and his blogsite was something like teamdicky. I stopped browsing his blog kasi may na-click ako na pop up at na-virus. Tanga lang.
Anyway, he also raced cyclocross (29er kasi siya) at na-astigan ako. Pero he went back to a freewheel hub. Masyado raw nakakapagod ata. hehehe!

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
. . muna habang inaayos un tomicog copy.
@sup ikaw nga mahilig sa parusa eh.... i also saw sa bike mag before... a group of guys on fixed cogs, cruiser frames and wide handlebars racing the 1st ss world championship and that guy who also joined with 9cogs and a rd attched pero un 9 cogs are all 18t cogs, they called it 9 ways to go single.....oy ! order tayo ng tomicog, papaano ba mag order nun...

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
dirtyjane, hope it's ok to use your thread... i have a few questions regarding fixies...
i'm getting a single speed commuter bike very soon (built bike). is it possible to convert the cog to a fixie? kung posible, paano? or can i purchase a fixed cog and replace the one that comes with the bike? what about coasterbrakes? as much as possible, i don't want to have any brake levers on the bars coz i'm planning to use a bullhorn. kung hindi ko maremedyuhan kasi, mapipilitan ako gumamit ng TT brake levers. want to know my options. thanks!!!!
padagdag:
read some stuff re 'flip-flop' hubs (a freewheel cog on one side and a fixed cog on the other (similar to the tomicog system). are standard hubs (non-disc) convertible to 'flip-flop' hubs? if not, where can i purchase a hub like this?

on flip-flop hubs. i haven't seen a 135mm (mtb width) flip-flob hub, but there are some for other bike applications. what bike are you getting? baka naman may kasama na flip-flop hub yun.

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
planning to get a trek soho s. i think the soho s has the flip flop option. just read it at their site minutes ago. problema lang kasi yung stock availability nung soho s. kung sakali baka sa trek district ako bumagsak. mas mahal nga lang kasi belt drive.

Re: look ma no freewheel..........
Belt = Bongga!
Go for the Soho S!
